Intensive English Programs

Stockton, CA

The school is located on the campus of the University of the Pacific, 1-1/2 hours from San Francisco and one hour from the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and close to Yosemite National Park.  The year-round swimming pool, movie theater, and fitness center make the University of the Pacific's lovely campus a great place to live and study.

University of the Pacific offers 80 undergraduate major courses of study, including accredited Business Administration, Law, Computer Science, and Engineering programs. English Program graduates may matriculate into the University of the Pacific as full-time undergraduate students if they meet all academic requirements. This usually means successful completion of Level 6 and the recommendation of the Academic Advisor.

THE LOCAL AREA

Stockton attracts a wide range of business and recreational activities. The local San Joaquin/Sacramento Delta offers boating, fishing, water skiing, and sailing. There are also many fine restaurants catering to water sports enthusiasts. Hiking, mountain biking, white-water river rafting and snow skiing are just a few of the activities that residents of this area enjoy in their leisure time.

Students should plan to fly into the Sacramento Airport.

HOUSING

Dormitory housing is available on campus year-round. Students have other English Program students, or in some cases American university students, as roommates. During the academic year,English Program students live in the same residence halls as University of the Pacific students. Each student is provided with a bed, desk, dresser, closet, and lamp. Sheets, pillows, and blankets may be purchased on campus.

A high-quality homestay program is offered.. Homestay families provide an atmosphere conducive to practicing English. Homes may be a short drive away (conveniently located near public transportation) or within walking or bicycling distance. If a student indicates s/he wishes to live with a host family, the match will be made in advance, and the student will be notified of the arrangement before departure for the US. Homestay families provide private rooms with bed, desk, chair, dresser, and closet.

Furnished and unfurnished apartments are available. A student can expect to find an apartment within two weeks of arrival. While waiting for placement, the student should be prepared to stay in a dormitory. The school will assist a student in finding an apartment. A large deposit may be required.

MEALS

The University of the Pacific Dining Hall serves three meals a day during the week. On the weekend, from September to May, the Dining Hall serves two meals a day. During the summer, the meal plan is reduced to 15 meals per week (three meals a day, Monday to Friday). Over university breaks or on certain holidays students are expected to purchase their meals off campus.

For homestay students, breakfast and dinner are eaten at the home. Lunch can be purchased at the University.

ACTIVITIES

The Association of International Chinese Students, Multi-Cultural Student Association, Muslim Student Association, Persian Club, Russian Club, and Spanish Club are just a few of the many cultural, recreational, religious, and special interest clubs and organizations on campus.

The University of the Pacific has a fitness center that students can join at a nominal fee, a year-round swimming pool, a range of intramural sports, and a gym that students use for basketball or volleyball. In addition, the Student Association of UoP offers a wide range of activities throughout the university's academic year.

Recreational activities on campus include a game room with pool tables, video arcade, and video borrowing. The University has excellent sports teams, such as NCAA Division I basketball, soccer, and tennis. There are also films in the University's on-campus movie theater, music at the UoP Conservatory, lectures, and other special events.

Stockton, located in California's Great Central Valley, is close to many world-class attractions. Snow skiing, hiking in Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, California's state capital in Sacramento, Pacific Ocean beaches, and Lake Tahoe are all within an hour or two of the University of the Pacific.

You should bring a camera, an extra supply of any prescription medicine, health records, a swimming suit for the summer, warm clothes for skiing in the winter, pictures from home, and a lot of enthusiasm!
