Intensive Business English

Who should take this course?

This course is designed for international students and professionals from all countries and backgrounds. Participants include those who wish to acquire the English skills to conduct business with non-native or native English speakers and students planning to pursue an MBA.

Is there a minimum level of English required?

Intensive Business English requires a high intermediate level of English (approximately 450 TOEFL or 500 TOEIC for admittance to the Intermediate Business English Course. An advanced level of English (approximately 474 TOEFL or 550 TOEIC for admittance to the Advanced Business English Course. Students are given a placement test upon arrival. Those who do not meet the minimum requirement will be placed in the regular Intensive English course. The Intensive English and Intensive Business English courses have the same costs.

Course content

30 hours per week. 4-week duration.

Intensive Business English teaches students more than basic grammar and general English skills. This course prepares students for effective business communication in English. The course is divided into two levels: intermediate and advanced.

Based on the results of the placement exam, students are assigned to classes. Monday through Thursday, there are two hours each of reading/writing instruction and listening/speaking instruction. On Friday, students attend a focus course integrating corporate interviews, individual study interests, and other professional activities. Skills gained include:

  • Business vocabulary
  • American idioms in a business context
  • Conversation
  • Pronunciation
  • Group discussions
  • Oral presentations
  • Cross-cultural communication skills
  • Business readings
  • Outside reading
  • Business writing
  • Resume writing
  • Business meetings and seminars

Advanced students will also focus on presentation and negotiation skills, small and large business networking, visual computer aids, and application essays.

 

Activities

Class activities include informational interviews with executives from major private and public organizations in the area. Additional visits may include the World Trade Center/Cleveland, the Federal Reserve Bank, the Plain Dealer Newspaper, and IMBA/BW seminars. Other possible area activities may be:

  • General Motors Tour
  • Cleveland Museum of Art
  • Great Lakes Brewing Company
  • Great Lakes Science Center and Omnimax Theater
  • Severance Hall
