The school is located on the campus of the University of Tampa, set on the shores of
the scenic Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa.
Students may apply for full-time enrollment at The University of Tampa with a TOEFL
score of 550. The TOEFL score requirement is waived if the student successfully completes
Level 6. Students who score between 500 and 549 on the TOEFL may be eligible to
enroll in classes at the University on a part-time basis, while still studying at the
English Program.
Upper-level students may audit The University of Tampa classes. The cost for auditing a
class is 50% of the normal per credit tuition fee of the University.
THE
LOCAL AREA
Tampa is a medium-sized city located on the West coast of Florida. Beautiful weather
and nearby beaches attract visitors from all over the world year-round. Tampa offers a
wide variety of shopping centers, fine restaurants, and cultural events. Public
transportation is available.
Students should arrive at Tampa International Airport.
IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION
All incoming students should be aware that the state of Florida requires all students
to be vaccinated against Measles, Mumps and Rubella (German Measles). You must bring proof
to the school, in English, of your vaccinations against these diseases in order to
register for classes. If you do not have proof of vaccinations you will be required to
obtain your vaccinations from a doctor immediately upon arrival in Tampa.
HOUSING
& MEALS
Dormitory space is available on a first come, first served basis. The student must
bring his or her own linens, towels and blankets, or be prepared to buy them upon arrival.
All students living in the dormitory during the academic year (from August to May), must
sign up for a meal plan (15 meals per week) at the University cafeteria. During the summer
months, students may choose to eat in the cafeteria or off campus. Room assignments in the
dormitories vary, but are most often doubles. Single rooms are not available.
American host families are also available. Students can choose to have meals included
or they can choose to buy and prepare their own food. Students are responsible for their
own transportation and telephone bills. All host families live within walking distance of
a public bus line which the student can use to come to school. Students can expect a 30-
to 40-minute commute to campus. Students will have a private bedroom and usually share a
bathroom with other members of the family.
If a student is interested in living in an apartment while studying at the English
Program, he or she must make arrangements for an apartment upon arrival in Tampa. It is
recommended that a student bring $2,500 in traveler's checks for deposits on the
apartment, utilities, telephone and furniture. It is also recommended that students plan
on arriving at least one week in advance to look for an apartment and move in before
classes begin. Students should plan on renting a car while searching for an apartment, as
the school's staff will not be able to bring them to all of the apartments they will want
to see. While waiting to move to an apartment, students should be prepared to stay in a
nearby hotel.
