THE LOCAL AREA

Oklahoma City, the state capital, is small enough to be friendly, yet large enough to offer a variety of cultural, civic, religious, entertainment and sports events. Located in the middle of the Great American West, the city also offers glimpses into the unique culture of Native American life. Oklahoma City has one of the lowest cost-of-living indexes among major U.S. cities.

ACTIVITIES

Local activities include learning about American Indian and Western culture through local festivals, powwows and rodeos, and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Local attractions and areas of interest:
Bricktown Ballpark - Located in historic Bricktown, this new state-of-the-art ballpark is home of the Oklahoma RedHawks Baseball Team. Once a busy warehouse area, Bricktown is Oklahoma City's newest entertainment and dining district.

Myriad Botanical Gardens and the Crystal Bridge - This 17-acre oasis in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City has as its centerpiece the seven-story Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory, featuring a fascinating collection of palm trees, flowers and exotic plans from across the globe.

Red Earth Festival - Native Americans can be seen in native dress during the Red Earth Festival parade in June each year. This is the largest celebration of Native American culture, dance and art and is located at the Myriad Convention Center.

Omniplex / Kirkpatrick Center - The Omniplex is an enormous facility which houses the hands-on Science Museum, Air Space Museum, Kirkpatrick Planetarium, International Photography Hall of Fame, Red Earth Indian Center, Kirkpatrick Art Galleries, etc.
